Biography
Dr. Gesell received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University where he earned various awards including scholar athlete and the Hettinger Scholarship for Excellence. Subsequently, he earned an M.D. from the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago where he was named to the Surgical Honor Society. From there, Dr. Gesell went on to an orthopaedic surgical residency at UMDNJ- Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine in New Brunswick, NJ. While at UMDNJ, he spent time as an assistant team physician for the Rutgers University Football Team.
Dr. Gesell then went on to serve as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. He was on the faculty at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute in Groton, Connecticut and was the team physician for the Coast Guard Academy. He also served as a Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, where he cared for a population of over 50,000 active duty Marines. After practicing for four years in the Navy, Dr. Gesell returned to complete subspecialty training at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, which has been named the top orthopedic hospital in the country by US News & World Report and has been the recipient of the HealthGrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award from 2007-2011.
Dr. Gesell is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and specializes in hip and knee replacement, arthroscopic surgery, degenerative joint disease and revision joint replacement. He belongs to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Dr. Gesell graduated from Rumson Fair-Haven High School, but prior to that, he spent ten years living overseas including Mexico City, Dublin and Paris. When not practicing medicine he enjoys time with his wife, two children and family that live in the Jersey Shore area. He also enjoys playing golf and traveling.
Dr. Gesell is available to see patients at the Tinton Falls, Toms River and Freehold Offices.
