With Spring upon us, many will venture outdoors once again for physical activity. it is important to remember that when minor sprains and strains do occur that R.I.C.E. is recommended

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

The ice will decrease blood flow and provide an anesthetic effect by numbing the area. Ice, compression and elevation will also act to decrease swelling. Ice is usually recommended 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off in the acute (first 24-48 hours) phase of injury.

Orthopaedic surgeons warn that heat can hurt in the acute stage because of increased blood flow to the area, which could potentially increase swelling and delay the healing process.
