Allen D. Nicholson, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in nonsurgical and surgical care for the shoulder and elbow. Dr. Nicholson joined Professional Orthopaedic Associates in 2021. Dr. Nicholson completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he graduated summa cum laude. He then completed medical school at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut and was awarded Honors for his thesis on skeletal maturity assessment. He received the 2014 Young Investigator Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition. Dr. Nicholson completed orthopaedic residency at Yale New Haven Hospital and served as Chief Resident. During residency he was named a member of the American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leaders Program and received the 2019 Resident Research Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society for his research on opioid consumption after shoulder surgery. 

Following residency, Dr. Nicholson pursued advanced shoulder and elbow fellowship training at the #1 ranked hospital in the US for orthopaedics, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Dr. Nicholson's mentors at HSS included leaders in the shoulder and elbow field and team physicians for the New York Mets, New York Giants, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Rangers. Dr. Nicholson learned cutting edge surgical techniques and authored articles on rotator cuff repair, shoulder arthroplasty, tendon transfers, and baseball injuries. Dr. Nicholson has published more than 50 peer reviewed articles in medical journals such as the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Arthroscopy, and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. 

Dr. Nicholson is an expert in the most modern and minimally invasive techniques for shoulder and elbow repair. His expertise includes rotator cuff repair, shoulder arthroplasty, shoulder instability, fracture care, sports injuries, tendon transfers, and tendon repair of the elbow. He employs the latest technological advancements in surgery including computer navigation, 3D surgical planning, stemless shoulder arthroplasty, and patient care management. With the patient’s long-term quality of life in mind, he makes it his mission to tailor each treatment to the unique needs of the individual. Dr. Nicholson is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society.
